One of my Historical Illustrations that I thought appropriate ti share today.....
Aragonese army at dawn before the Battle of Gagliano (1300), in Sicily, where they faced the Angevin troops of Charles II of Naples and Sicily. It was recorded that the Almogavars beat their weapons against stones/flint to produce sparks and so frighten the enemy, while screaming Desperta Ferro! (Awake, iron!), The site put fear into the French Army and their commander the Count of Breda stated " We are fighting against demons".
The knight in the foreground is Blasco d'Alagon el Vell.
(Originally painted for Desperta Ferro Magazine)
